Lake Baikal is considered one of the deepest lakes in the world. The surface of the lake is equal to Belgium with its 10-million population and a number of cities! 336 permanent rivers and streams feed Baikal, and half of the incoming water is brought by Selenga. That seems to be even more surprising taking into account that there is only 1 river that flows out of the lake that is Angara river, sometimes called wild due to its intensive flow. The surface of the flat water in Baikal is 31,470 sq. km. The maximum depth is 1,637 m, while the average is 730 m.
