Valeria explained both the history, art and furnishing's importance. She was very good at getting us around all the big tour groups....the museum is mobbed with busloads of tourists both from the cruise ships and generic tours and it makes it very hard to see the top art, like the Rembrandts.
Tour books recommend seeing both the gold and diamond rooms which can only be toured with a Hermitage guide, tickets purchased separately. If you only have time for one, see Diamond, it includes representatives of what is in Gold Room.

Was excellent and tour guide was very cordial and knowledgable
This tour will take you to parts of the Hermitage cruise ship passengers don't normally reach. We saw all the artefacts from ancient times with an excellent guide who was friendly, courteous and very helpful. Saw the Rembrandts without a crowd. Very nice lunch at a nearby restaurant afterwards.
A beautiful collection of buildings whose content was just delightful. I particularly loved that each room was decorated uniquely - the frescoes and ceilings were a true delight.
This was a great tour. Our guide, Irene, was knowledgeable about the art and the history of this building and it was very interesting. Also recommend booking this tour just for the group access, group cloak room and no lines. You want to spend as much time as possible within the walls of this building not waiting. Lunch at nearby restaurant was nice. We had our own private room where we could discuss all the beauty we had just seen.
