Day 1: Arrival in Yakutsk

Meeting trip participants at Yakutsk Airport. Transfer to hotel/s. Free time. 14:00 – 18:00 – Extra warm clothing shopping and city sightseeings with visits to the Atlasovs’ ethnographic complex and the Kingdom of Permafrost Ice Tunnel Museum. Dinner at the Chochur Muran restaurant (not included). Transfer back to hotel/s.

Day 2: Drive Yakutsk to Khandyga

432 km (according to our GPS track), 10 hr. 09:00 – Leaving hotel/s. Crossing the Lena River on the ice road. Stop for a group photo on the ice road. Passing by Nizhny Bestyakh town. Drive to Khandyga with stops for photo sessions, lunch at a roadside café in Tyungyulyu and dinner at a roadside café in Uolba. Crossing the Aldan River. Arrival in Khandyga by 19:00. Check-in at the apartment-based private hotel (twin-triple room, shared WC/shower, shared kitchen). Evening tea. Rest.

Day 3: Drive Khandyga to Oymyakon

514 km, 11-12 hr. Morning tea at hotel. 08:00 – leaving hotel (depends on travelers’ readiness). Drive to Teply Klyuch, 70 km, 1 hr. Refuel. Time for brunch (not included) at a roadside café. Drive to Kyubyume, 250 km, 6.5 hr. Through the mountain passes of the Verkhoyansk Range. Stops at remarkable place, such as Tomporuk Pass, Yellow and Black passes, Zayachya Petlya, etc. Time for the early dinner (not included) at the “Cuba” café in Kyubyume. Drive to Oyamyakon, 194 km, with a refuel stop in Tomtor. Arrival to Oymyakon around 22:00. Dinner at family’s. Overnight in an ordinary village-type wooden house (twin-triple rooms, shared kitchen, wash basin inside, outdoor toilet) in Oymyakon.

Day 4: Full day in Oymyakon

Breakfast at family’s. Visit to the Pole of Cold Stella. Receiving the Pole of Cold certificate from a winter fairy character Chyskhaan, the Keeper of the Cold. Strolling across the village of Oymyakon. Cold weather experiments. Lunch at family’s. Ice-fishing (traditional) on the Indigirka River. Dinner at family’s. The Sakha culture evening in the House of Archyy. Evening tea and overnight at family’s (the same place).

Day 5: Drive Oymyakon to Teply Klyuch

Breakfast in the early morning. 08:00 – Leaving a guest house. Drive to Tomtor, 41 km. On the way, we’ll have a visit to the Yakutian horse breeding farm. In Tomtor, we visit the ice tunnel complex called “Residence of Chyskhaan”, which remarkable for its huge snowflake-like ice crystals on its surface. Drive to Kyubyume, 153 km. We’ll ride through the Oymyakon winter forest and mountains we have missed during a previous ride in the dark time the other day. Dinner at the “Cuba” café. Drive back to Teply Klyuch through evening mountains. Dinner at café in Teply Klyuch. Overnight in Teply Klyuch. Evening tea and overnight at the apartment-based private hotel (twin-triple room, shared WC/shower inside, shared kitchen).

Day 6: Drive Teply Klyuch to Topolinoe

Village of reindeer herders, 219 km, 5 hr. Time for breakfast (not included) at café. Visit to Museum of GULAG History in Teply Klyuch. Drive to Topolinoe with stops to observe the remains of GULAG camps en route. Arrival to Topolinoye by the evening. Dinner at truck drivers’ cafe. Overnight at family’s apartment (rooms for 2-3 people, shared kitchen, shared WC/shower).

Day 7: Topolinoye – Reindeer Herders – Lake Emandja

Breakfast (not included) at cafe. Walking across the town of Topolinoye. Visit to the reindeer herd in mountain forest. Tea with herders at the winter camp. Lunch (not included) at a cafe. Start of the journey toward Batagay by the longest winter road, 711 km. Stay at Lake Emandja for overnight (in a vehicle).

Day 8: Drive Emandja to Batagay

This day we pass by such places as the rivers Khatykchaan, Nelgese, Adycha, Tokum, the abandoned town of Alys Khaya, and other places. Lunch at cafe in Tokum. Arrival to Batagay in the evening. Check-in at private hotel in Batagay (single rooms, shared WC/shower)

Day 9: Day trip from Batagay to Verkhoyansk

Drive to Verkhoyansk, 71 km. Visit to the “Pole of Cold” regional museum. Free time. Lunch at family’s in Verkhoyansk. Back to Batagay by the evening. Overnight at the same private hotel in Batagay.

Day 10: Batagay to Yakutsk

Transfer to Batagay Airport. Flight to Yakutsk, 2 hr. Arrival in Yakutsk Airport. Transfer to hotel. Free time. Souvenir shopping with a guide in Yakutsk.

Day 11: Departure

Transfer to Yakutsk Airport. Flight from Yakutsk.

Safety:

We register a trip at Russian EMERCOM (Safety Department).

We travel on two vehicles prepared and equipped for long winter journeys.

We use a satellite phone and a GPS tracker.

Required to bring: Warm clothes. They are thermo underwears, wooly or thermo sweaters, scarf, Arctic versions of pants and parkas from such brands as The North Face or Canada Goose, hats, boots, gloves. Fur hats and fur boots might be bought in Yakutsk.

Some clothes might be provided for rental at additional cost.
