Yakutsk to Verkhoyansk Winter Trip

From the Coldest City to the Coldest Town.

Route: Yakutsk – Khandyga – Teply Klyuch – Topolinoe – Batagai – Verkhoyansk – Batagai – Yakutsk.
Distance: 1500 km from Yakutsk to Verkhoyansk (one way without additional drives).
Tour Type: Winter overland expedition.
Difficulty level: Hard to some extent. Extreme cold weather, long drives, Soviet-type accommodation.

Itinerary Hide all details

Day 1: Arrival at Yakutsk Airport

Transfer to hotel. Free time. 14:00 – 18:00 – Shopping for extra warm clothes and city sightseeing with Mammoth Museum and the Kingdom of Permafrost ice tunnel complex.

Day 2: Drive Yakutsk to Khandyga

432 km (according to our GPS track), 10 hr. 08:00 – Leaving hotel/s. Crossing the Lena River on the ice road. Stop for a group photo on the ice road. Passing by Nizhny Bestyakh town. Drive to Khandyga with stops for photo sessions, lunch at a roadside café in Tyungyulyu, visit to Cherkekh Outdoor Museum, and dinner at a roadside café in Uolba. Crossing the Aldan River. Arrival in Khandyga by 20:00. Check-in at the apartment-based private hotel (twin-triple room, common bathroom, common kitchen). Evening tea. Rest.

Day 3: Drive Khandyga – GULAGs – Topolinoe

Village of reindeer herders, 289 km. Morning tea at hotel. Leaving hotel (depends on travelers’ readiness) in the early morning. Drive to Teply Klyuch, 70 km, 1 hr. Refuel. Time for breakfast at a roadside café. Visit to Museum of GULAG History in Teply Klyuch. Drive to Topolinoe through Big and Small Olchansky Mountain Passes with stops to observe the remains of GULAG camps en route. Arrival to Topolinoe by the evening. Dinner at truck drivers’ café. Overnight at hosting family’s apartment (twin rooms, common kitchen, indoor bathroom). Rest.

Day 4: Drive Topolinoe – Lake Emandja

Breakfast at truck drivers’ café in Topolinoe (not included). Strolling across the town of Topolinoe. Visit to the reindeer herd in mountain forest. Time with herders at the winter camp. Back to Topolinoe. Lunch at the same cafe (not included). Driving to Lake Emandja, 150 km. Overnight inside a car in the area of the meteo station.

Day 5: Drive Lake Emandja to Batagai

On ice roads along frozen mountain rivers. Strech is 350 km. Run time ±12 hr. On this stretch, we pass by such places as the rivers Nelgese, Kireng-Yuryakh, Boroulakh as well as many other places. Arrival to Batagai in the evening. Check-in at private hotel in Batagai (twin rooms).

Day 6: Day trip Batagai to Verkhoyansk

Drive to Verkhoyansk, 71 km. Free time and time for lunch at cafe in Verkhoyansk. Visit to a local history museum. Back to Batagai in the evening. Time for dinner and overnight at private hotel in Batagai.

Day 7: Flight Batagai to Yakutsk

(Note: one-day flight delay might happen due to bad weather). Transfer to Batagai Airport. Arrival in Yakutsk Airport after lunch. Transfer to hotel. Time for souvenir shopping with a guide in Yakutsk

Day 8: Departure

Transfer to Yakutsk Airport. Flight from Yakutsk.

Important! We recommend to reserve one extra day for Yakutsk, as the flight from Batagai might be delayed due to bad weather.

  • We travel on two vehicles prepared and equipped for long winter journeys.
  • We always stay in touch by a satellite phone.

Required to bring: Warmest clothes. They are thermo underwears, wooly or thermo sweaters, scarf, Arctic versions of pants and parkas from such brands as The North Face or Canada Goose, hats, boots, gloves. Fur hats and fur boots might be bought in Yakutsk.

Some clothes might be provided for rental at additional cost.
